Logisim-evolution FAQ
Short, direct answers to the questions people ask most about Logisim-evolution. Each answer links to the full guide where there is one.
Is Logisim-evolution free?
Yes — completely free and open-source under the GNU GPL-3.0 license. No trials, no paid tiers, no license keys. Universities can install it on every lab machine at zero cost.
Is Logisim-evolution safe to download?
Yes. It is open-source software with no bundled adware and no telemetry. Download it from the official GitHub release (via our download page) and avoid re-uploaded copies on random file hosts. Full details: Is Logisim-evolution safe?
What is the latest version?
v5.0.0, released September 2026. See what’s new in v5.0.0.
Do I need Java to run it?
Only for the portable .jar file, which needs Java 21 or newer (we recommend Eclipse Temurin OpenJDK 21). The Windows .msi and macOS .dmg installers bundle their own Java runtime — no setup needed.
Is there an online / web version?
No. Logisim-evolution is desktop software only — there is no official web version. Sites claiming to offer one are not affiliated with the project. More: Logisim-evolution online.
Is there an Android app?
No. The project publishes no Android app; APKs offered elsewhere are unofficial and potentially unsafe.
What do the wire colors mean? Why are my wires red?
Green = 0, bright green = 1, blue = undefined/floating, red = error (usually conflicting drivers or a width mismatch), gray = disconnected, orange = bit-width mismatch. Fix guide: troubleshooting.
How is this different from the original Logisim?
Original Logisim (by Carl Burch) stopped active maintenance around 2014. Logisim-evolution is the community fork that continued development — modern Java, new components, VHDL/Verilog export, FPGA support. Comparison: Logisim vs Logisim-evolution.
Can I export Verilog or VHDL?
Yes — FPGA → FPGA Commander → “Generate HDL only” translates your schematic into synthesizable HDL. Guide: export Verilog/VHDL.
Where do I report bugs or ask for features?
On the project’s GitHub issue tracker. How-to: Logisim-evolution on GitHub. Note this site is an independent community resource, not the project itself.
